On the San Antonio River walk was a tree with fern like leaves, red trumpet flowers, and small green “fruits”?
This tree was approximately 25 feet tall, and the fruit looked kind of like little green pumpkins or lanterns. Thank you so much for your help!
What you were seeing was a trumpet vine (Campsis radicans), also known as a hummingbird vine in some areas. They grow like crazy in Texas. They get very large, and can be mistaken for trees when they’re several years old, but they are in fact woody vines. Hummingbirds love them, as the name implies. Here are a couple of links to drawings and photographs, just to be sure I have the right thing. The “fruits” are more like bean pods, and have sometimes HUNDREDS of paper-thing seeds (not easy to germinate at all, unfortunately). They’ll grow just about anyplace; it’s easiest to get a starter plant rather than trying to grow them from seed, however.
